We kindly inform you about the recent EWC Statement condemning the Russian attack on the Ukrainian’s largest printing house in Kharkiv.
Indeed, we have been informed on 25 May by Ms Olena Odynoka, the Deputy Director of International Cooperation of the Ukrainian Book Sector that the Russian missiles destroyed recently one of Ukraine’s largest printing houses, Faktor-Druk. This was one of the largest full-cycle printing complexes in Eastern Europe, in which almost all publishing houses of Ukraine print their books. It was one of the key enterprises for the book publishing cycle in Ukraine and the stoppage in the work of such an enterprise will affect the entire sphere of the Ukrainian book publishing. Ms Odynoka highlighted that Factor-Druk was bombed exactly one week before the International Book Arsenal Festival, when dozens of publishing book novelties of Ukrainian and European authors were printed there for the book fair in Kyiv.
This brutal and inhuman act of war took the lives of seven civilians who were working at the printing house, 22 people working there were injured.
That is why a common Statement was submitted to the Annual General Assembly held last weekend in Helsinki.
Please find enclosed the document which was adopted unanimously.
The Statement was published on the EWC website and its social media.
With warm regards,
Zsuzsánna Dóczy on behalf of Nicole Pfister Fetz, Secretary General of EWC
